Chapter 1: An Unexpected Guest in the Laboratory

I am Olivia Hartfield, an eccentric obsessed with various mysterious scientific studies. I have spent countless days and nights in this scientific laboratory located on the outskirts of town. Today, like usual, I was tinkering with bottles and complex instruments, humming a tuneless little tune.

"Damn this reagent, why can't it react the way I expect?" I muttered, frowning as I stared intently at a pile of cells under the microscope. The lab was filled with a pungent smell of chemicals, surrounded by tall experimental equipment, with blinking indicator lights and the buzzing sounds of machinery creating a unique background music.

Just as I was fully focused, a slight noise suddenly came from the corner of the lab. I perked up my ears, my heart skipped a beat. This place rarely had anyone else around besides me, let alone such strange noises.

"Who’s there?" I called out loudly, my voice trembling slightly. I slowly set down the instrument in my hand and walked toward the source of the sound. My heart began to race, and my mind conjured up various scenes from horror movies—ghosts of mad scientists, mutated monsters... Oh dear, I was scaring myself.

As I reached the corner, I found a woman in a stunning black gown standing there. She had cascading red hair, skin so pale it was almost translucent, and deep purple eyes that seemed to smile enigmatically at me. She looked almost unreal, like a character stepped out of an ancient oil painting.

"Who are you? How did you get here?" I asked cautiously, trying to appear calm.

She raised an eyebrow slightly, a charming smile playing at the corners of her mouth. "I’m Evelyn Swanson, dear. I’m here because I’m quite interested in your research." Her voice was soft like velvet, yet carried an indescribable allure.

I silently scoffed; interested? This wasn’t a place for casual visits. "How did you get in? This is a highly confidential laboratory."

Evelyn elegantly stepped closer, exuding a faint floral scent mixed with the sharp chemical odor, creating an oddly harmonious blend. "Oh, you needn’t worry about that. I have my ways." She winked, as if sharing a little secret.

I looked at her, filled with suspicion. Who was this woman? She didn’t seem like an ordinary intruder. "What do you want?"

Evelyn approached me, gently picking up a test tube filled with blue liquid and examining it under the light. "I heard you’re researching a fascinating potion, and I’d like to see it."

I snatched the test tube back. "This isn’t a toy! This is the result of my hard work, and it’s still in the experimental stage." I felt a surge of irritation; how could this woman be so careless with my things?

Evelyn, however, didn’t seem offended. Instead, she laughed softly. "You’re adorable, Olivia. I know it’s important, and perhaps I could help you."

I widened my eyes. "How do you know my name?" I was sure I had never met her before; how could she know so much about me?

She simply smiled mysteriously, not answering my question. I began to scrutinize her, sensing something was off. Her skin was too pale, almost sickly, and there seemed to be a secret hidden in her gaze.

"Who are you really? Come clean, or I’ll call security." I threatened, though I wasn’t sure if security could handle her.

Evelyn sighed softly. "Alright, since you’re so eager to know. I’m actually a vampire." Her tone was flat, as if she were commenting on the weather.

I froze for a moment, then couldn’t help but laugh. "A vampire? You must be joking! There are no such things as vampires; have you watched too many movies?" I thought she must be out of her mind or just messing with me.

Evelyn smiled at me, unfazed. She waved her hand gently in front of my eyes, and suddenly, I felt the air around me grow cold, the lights in the lab flickered. Her eyes turned blood-red, and two long fangs protruded from her mouth.

I stumbled back in terror. "You... you really are a vampire?" My legs felt weak, my mind blank. How could this be? Aren’t vampires just legends and movies?

Evelyn retracted her fangs, her eyes returning to normal. "Now do you believe me?" Her voice regained that soft tone.

I leaned against the lab table, trying to compose myself. "Why are you telling me this? What do you want from me?" Fear filled my heart, but curiosity lingered.

Evelyn stepped closer, placing her hands on my shoulders. "As I mentioned, I’m interested in your potion. I’ve heard it might help me walk freely in the sunlight."

I looked at her, hesitating. The potion I was studying did have some unique effects, but it was far from being able to change a vampire's nature. "My potion isn’t perfected yet, and I don’t know if it would even work on a vampire."

Evelyn gently stroked my hair. "I believe you have this ability, dear. You’re a genius scientist, aren’t you?" Her eyes sparkled with expectation.

I felt a bit embarrassed under her gaze. "Even if I could improve the potion, why would you trust me? We just met."

Evelyn smiled. "Sometimes, intuition is more important than anything else. I can sense you’re a kind person, and your passion for science is admirable."

I felt touched, but still worried. "But if I help you, will there be any danger? I don’t want to get involved in any supernatural conflicts."

Evelyn shook her head. "There won’t be any, as long as you do as I say. And I’ll reward you handsomely."

I thought it over; although everything felt insane, my curiosity overpowered my fear. "Alright, I can give it a try, but I can’t guarantee success."

Evelyn beamed. "Wonderful, Olivia! I knew I chose the right person."

Just then, there was a sudden knock on the lab door. I jumped. "Who is it?"

"Dr. Hartfield, it’s me, Security Tom. I just saw the lights flickering in here. Is everything alright?"

I glanced at Evelyn, unsure of what to do. But she remained calm, waving her hand gently towards the door and whispering in my ear, "Tell him everything is fine and to leave."

I took a deep breath and called out, "I’m fine, Tom. It was probably a malfunction with the equipment; I’m handling it. You can go back now."

"Okay, Doctor. If there’s any problem, just call me." Tom’s voice faded away.

I sighed in relief. "That was too close. If he found you here, it would be trouble."

Evelyn smiled. "Don’t worry, I’m here. Now, let’s get started. Tell me about your research progress."

I nodded and led Evelyn to my lab table, beginning to explain my research findings and the challenges I faced. Evelyn listened intently, occasionally offering constructive suggestions. I discovered that although she was a vampire, she seemed to have a deep understanding of science.

"How do you know so much about science?" I asked curiously.

Evelyn chuckled. "I’ve lived for so long; I can’t just learn nothing. And naturally, I pay special attention to things that could change my fate."

As we discussed and conducted experiments, hours passed without notice. With Evelyn's help, I seemed to find some new insights, and the experiments made some progress.

"Let’s call it a day for now." I stretched, feeling a bit tired.

Evelyn nodded. "Alright, you rest. I’ll come back tomorrow."

I looked at her, feeling a bit reluctant. Although she was a vampire, our time together had created a special bond. "Be careful."

Evelyn smiled. "Don’t worry, dear." Then she turned and vanished into the darkness.

I stood in the lab, watching the direction she disappeared, my mind still racing. Everything that had happened today felt like a dream, but I knew it was just the beginning. I was about to be drawn into a mysterious and dangerous supernatural world, and my fate would change from this moment on. I sighed and began tidying the lab, preparing for the unknown challenges of tomorrow.
