Chapter 2: A Warm Encounter
After enduring that terrifying night, Lyra unexpectedly gained supernatural abilities, putting immense pressure on her body and mind. On this day, she woke up feeling utterly weak, her head heavy and clouded. She struggled to sit up but found she lacked the strength, a strong sense of discomfort enveloping her.
Lying in bed, Lyra gazed at the dimly lit room, a wave of helplessness washing over her. She didn’t know what to do; in this slum, she had no family to rely on and not enough money to see a doctor. All she could do was silently endure the pain, hoping to recover soon.
At that moment, a gentle knock came from outside the door. Lyra strained to prop herself up and weakly asked, “Who is it?”
“Hello, I’m your new neighbor. My name is Elara,” came an elegant voice from outside.
Lyra felt a bit puzzled but made an effort to open the door. The moment the door swung open, she saw a beautiful and noble-looking woman. Elara had long, shiny black hair, and her deep-set eyes sparkled with a mysterious light. She wore a flowing black robe, cinched at the waist with a golden belt, exuding an air of elegance.
Noticing Lyra’s pale complexion, Elara frowned slightly. “You don’t look well. Are you sick?” she asked with concern.
Lyra weakly nodded. “I don’t know what’s wrong; I just feel so drained.”
Elara stepped into the room and gently helped Lyra back onto the bed. “You need to rest. I brought you some cookies I made. Have a few later; it might help you feel better,” she said, placing a beautifully crafted box of cookies on the bedside table.
Lyra looked at Elara, her heart filled with gratitude. In this indifferent world, Elara’s kindness brought her a glimmer of warmth.
Elara sat by the bed, touching Lyra’s forehead. “You have a fever; we need to cool you down,” she said, immediately fetching a basin of water, soaking a towel, and gently placing it on Lyra’s forehead.
Lyra closed her eyes, feeling the coolness of the towel. Though her body was weak, her heart was warm. She didn’t understand why Elara was being so kind to her, but she knew that at this moment, Elara’s care was exactly what she needed.
As Elara took care of Lyra, they chatted. She shared that she had come from a faraway place in search of a mysterious power. Elara also told Lyra that many unknown things awaited exploration in this world.
Listening to Elara’s words, Lyra felt a surge of curiosity. She had never considered that there were so many mysterious things in this world. She began to take an interest in Elara’s story and felt hopeful about her own future.
Time passed slowly, with Elara attentively caring for Lyra. She fed her water, changed the towel, and occasionally checked Lyra’s forehead to see if her temperature was dropping. Watching Elara’s busy figure, Lyra felt deeply moved.
“Thank you, Elara,” Lyra whispered.
Elara smiled at her. “No need to be so polite; we’re neighbors, and it’s only right to help each other.”
As time went on, Lyra’s condition gradually improved. Her temperature began to drop, and she felt less weak. Seeing Lyra getting better, Elara felt a sense of relief.
“Are you feeling any better?” Elara asked.
Lyra nodded. “Much better, thank you for taking care of me.”
Elara smiled. “That’s good. You should rest a bit more. I’ll go make you something to eat.”
With that, Elara stood up and left the room. Lyra watched her retreating figure, filled with gratitude. She knew there were still many kind people in this world who would lend a helping hand when needed.
After a while, Elara returned, carrying a bowl of steaming porridge. “Here, have something to eat. You haven’t had anything for a long time,” she said, placing the porridge on the bedside table and helping Lyra sit up against the pillow.
Looking at the bowl of porridge, Lyra felt a wave of emotion. She had never imagined that someone could care for her so deeply in this cold world. She picked up a spoon and began to eat slowly. The warmth of the porridge brought comfort to her stomach.
Elara sat by the bed, watching Lyra eat. Her gaze was filled with concern and tenderness, making Lyra feel a long-lost warmth.
“Elara, why are you being so nice to me?” Lyra asked.
Elara smiled. “Because in this world, we all need each other’s help and support. And I can sense that you are a kind person, worthy of my care.”
A warm current surged through Lyra’s heart. She had never thought she would receive such care and attention from someone else. She decided that once she recovered, she would repay Elara’s kindness.
Under Elara's attentive care, Lyra’s health improved day by day. Her strength gradually returned, and her spirits lifted. Elara felt joy seeing Lyra getting better.
“How are you feeling now?” Elara asked.
Lyra smiled. “I feel much better, thanks to you. I don’t know what I would have done without you.”
Elara shook her head. “No need to be so polite; this is what I should do. You’re still weak and need to rest. I’ll stay by your side to take care of you.”
Lyra looked at Elara, her heart filled with emotion. She knew that many beautiful things awaited her discovery in this world. She decided that once she was well, she would explore this mysterious world with Elara.
As afternoon turned to evening, Lyra had fully regained her strength. The bond between her and Elara grew closer. They chatted, cooked together, and explored every corner of the slum. During this time, Lyra discovered that Elara was not only kind but also incredibly wise and courageous. She radiated a unique charm that drew Lyra in.
“Elara, you’re really amazing,” Lyra said.
Elara smiled. “Not amazing at all; I’m just doing what I should.”
Lyra shook her head. “No, you’re brave and kind. In this indifferent world, you are the warmest person I’ve ever met.”
Elara looked at Lyra, her heart filled with emotion. She knew that in this world, many kind people like Lyra needed each other’s help and support. She decided to join Lyra in bringing more warmth and hope to the world.
